Selma

A powerful historical drama that captures the strategic and moral battle at the heart of the U.S. civil rights movement. Directed by Ava DuVernay and starring David Oyelowo as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the film chronicles the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery marches for voting rights — a campaign that became a turning point in the struggle for racial justice and democracy.

Set against the backdrop of entrenched segregation and violent voter suppression in the American South, Selma focuses not only on the marches themselves but also on the behind-the-scenes strategic debates: how to force President Lyndon B. Johnson to act, how to expose injustice to a national audience, and how to balance moral clarity with political pragmatism. King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) navigate tensions with the younger Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organizers already working in Selma, while also contending with internal disagreements over nonviolence, timing, and public confrontation.

King and his team deliberately chose Selma as the stage for a national confrontation — a place where brutality could no longer be hidden and where media coverage would compel the federal government to intervene. Through disciplined planning, mass participation, and moral framing, the campaign transforms local suffering into national outrage, culminating in Johnson’s introduction of the Voting Rights Act to Congress.

Selma conveys how movements win not only through courage but through strategic calculation — understanding leverage, timing, and how to pressure those in power without losing public trust. It also portrays King’s doubts, exhaustion, and the emotional toll of leadership, grounding the legend in the daily grind of organizing and decision-making under pressure.
