Pride

Pride is a powerful and engaging film that combines humor, history, and real-life struggle. Set during the UK miners' strike of 1984-1985, it tells the story of LGBT activists who, despite initial awkwardness, build a meaningful alliance with striking miners in Wales. The miners were fighting against government policies that threatened their livelihoods, while the LGBT community was navigating both the AIDS crisis and widespread discrimination. Over time, the two groups come together, not just as allies but as comrades in a shared fight for justice.

For families, especially those raising future activists, Pride is a great pick. It’s accessible and shows how movements can gain strength when they form unexpected alliances. The miners' union, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), had been facing fierce opposition from the government, but with the support of LGBT activists, they were able to raise awareness for their cause and gather more widespread solidarity. Although the strike did not result in a victory for the miners, the alliance between the miners and the LGBT community proved transformative.

A key achievement of this alliance was the NUM’s decision to amend its bylaws in 1985 to officially recognize and support the rights of LGBT workers, making it one of the first major unions to include LGBT inclusion in its framework. This victory demonstrated how cross-community solidarity could lead to institutional change and set a powerful precedent for future movement-building efforts. Pride is a reminder of how collective action can create lasting change and shape the future of social justice movements.
