I am the revolution

A powerful and deeply inspiring documentary that follows three extraordinary women—Selay Ghaffar in Afghanistan, Rojda Felat in Syria, and Yanar Mohammed in Iraq—who are leading feminist struggles in some of the most repressive and war-torn regions in the world. Against enormous odds, they fight not just for survival, but for systems rooted in equality, dignity, and collective liberation.

What sets this film apart is its unapologetically feminist lens. These women are not only resisting patriarchal violence, but building revolutionary alternatives in its place. Rojda Felat, a commander in the all-women YPJ (Women’s Protection Units), leads armed Kurdish forces in northern Syria where gender equality is not an afterthought—it is core to the political vision. The Kurdish women’s movement explicitly links anti-capitalist, anti-statist ideology with radical democracy and women’s liberation, and has become one of the most visible feminist military forces in the world.

In Iraq, Yanar Mohammed works to protect women from honor killings and domestic violence while organizing women workers and leading one of the most visible secular feminist organizations in the region. Selay Ghaffar, in Taliban-dominated Afghanistan, helps run underground schools for girls and publicly challenges warlords and fundamentalists alike with fearless clarity.

Far from being stories of victimhood, I Am the Revolution offers a blueprint for grassroots feminist resistance under fire—literally. The film is a must-watch for activists, feminists, and organizers everywhere. It invites us to rethink what “revolution” looks like when it’s led by women, grounded in community, and unwilling to separate liberation from gender justice.

While not suitable for young children due to its depiction of war and repression, the film is ideal for adults and older teens ready to engage with complex, intersectional struggles.
