Based on a true story that inspired activists across Latin America, this film shows how one woman’s suffering becomes a rallying point for many. The real Belén was a young woman charged with a crime after a miscarriage in Tucumán in 2014 and sentenced to eight years in prison under Argentina’s strict abortion laws at the time. The film shows how her lawyer and a group of women turn one criminal case into a public fight: they defend Belén in court, expose abuse in the system, and build a large campaign that helps change abortion politics in the country.
Directed with deep care by Dolores Fonzi, who also plays the lawyer, the film mixes personal emotion with a view of the wider movement. Public marches, letter‑writing, and legal work come together behind a clear demand: that autonomy and justice belong to everyone, not only to those with money or power.
Today, abortion is legal in Argentina, but access is being weakened in practice, especially since Javier Milei took office in late 2023. Feminist and human rights groups are still organizing, using Belén and other cultural tools to defend the law and push for it to be fully carried out.
