Behind the Mask: Animal Liberation Front

A gripping documentary that takes viewers inside the global animal liberation movement, revealing people behind one of the most secretive networks of activism — the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). Directed by Shannon Keith, the film weaves together hidden-camera footage, personal interviews, and firsthand testimony from activists who risked and, in many cases, endured imprisonment to rescue animals and expose systemic cruelty in laboratories, fur farms, and industrial agriculture.

Through night-vision rescues, raw video evidence, and emotional interviews, Behind the Mask confronts the moral question at the heart of animal justice: when compassion is criminalized, what forms of resistance remain? Some of the activists featured in the film — whose operations are shown through real footage — served up to five years in prison for actions such as freeing animals, filming abuse, and setting fire to property. Their stories reveal both the courage and the cost of challenging vast industries built on exploitation.

New laws sharply expand prison sentences for property-related protest and sabotage, criminalizing not only animal liberation but also climate activism and investigative exposure. In this environment, the ALF no longer functions as a structured organization, but as a decentralized network of individuals and small groups who act autonomously, guided by shared ethics: no harm to humans and the goal of freeing animals from suffering. This leaderless, non-hierarchical model allows actions to continue despite long prison sentences and constant surveillance.

Despite this repression, the movement’s courage and storytelling has reshaped public opinion. The film’s evidence helped fuel the growth of broader, above-ground organizations like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the Animal Justice Party in Australia, and the Animal Justice League in the U.S., which now pursue systemic reform through education, media, and legislation.

Since the film’s release, the movement has won major policy shifts. In Europe, conventional battery cages for laying hens have been banned, and pregnant sows must be housed in groups rather than individual stalls, while several countries are phasing out remaining cage systems altogether as part of a continent-wide effort to end cage farming. Many corporations have also eliminated animal testing, replacing it with modern non-animal research methods. These victories reflect how exposure and activism once seen as fringe helped catalyze structural change.

Raw, urgent, and deeply human, Behind the Mask remains one of the most powerful portraits of conscience-driven activism ever filmed. It challenges viewers to consider the limits of legality and the meaning of justice when compassion itself is punished.
