Sergio (he/they) was born in Colombia and grew up in Nicaragua before coming to the US for science education. In college, they joined UC Davis’ student union and focused on policies around gender equity, sexual assault, and trans healthcare. A formative experience in grassroots movements was his involvement in the #FireKatehi direct actions to unseat the chancellor. While working in a genetics lab, he led the collection of signatures among colleagues that led to the creation of the first union for lab technicians in California. Driven by their passion to democratize knowledge, they pivoted from biology to science communications. Sergio served as a Communications Technician for the National Park Service through AmeriCorps and now supports SMT’s mission of increasing access to technological tools and strategies.
